Papuan Gulf Drum

This fish-tailed hand drum is from the Papuan Gulf area in New Guinea. It was collected by Lissauer in 1989 and dates to the early 20th century. There are traces of orange and white pigment in the carved area at the narrow end and a split bamboo fiber woven around the wider edge which held the drum head. There is some evidence of wear on the surface of the wide edge. It measures 25 1/2" high and 4 1/2" diameter at the widest point. It sells for $3500.00
